Theatrical Rehearsal Outline

Primary Rehearsals
Primary rehearsals usually take place in a rehearsal studio, often at a location different from the theater where the performances take place. In some instances, as with the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, the rehearsal studios are at the theater. These primary rehearsals usually take place six days per week, with standard hours from 10:00am - 6:00pm but hours on a given day can change for the entire company, or just for certain actors.

Technical Rehearsals
Tech rehearsals occur when a production moves from the studio setting to their actual theater. It is during tech rehearsals that all the elements of a stage production (lighting and sound cues, props, sets, and costumes) appear together in rehearsal for the first time and is the first time the actors will rehearse on the stage that will be used for performances. During tech rehearsals, the actors work 10 out of 12 hours. Tech rehearsals customarily last for a week, but the more technical the production, such as The Lion King, the longer the technical rehearsal period.

Rehearsals during Previews
The artistic and creative teams attend preview performances and work to fine-tune the production. In order to achieve their goal, they must hold daily rehearsals to implement changes.  As the actors must have twelve hours between the end of a performance and the start of the following day, rehearsals during previews usually occur no earlier than noon. This gives
actors ample time for a meal break prior to returning to the theater for the evening performance.
