Our History

In February 1982, On Location Education was born. It started as a suggestion from a friend of Alan Simon's to create a full-fledged tutoring service to fill the need for on-set teachers created by the new Screen Actors Guild regulations adapted in 1980.  One month later the company tutored its first student, Michael Perlman, on a television show called Nurse.  In June 1982, OLE found a Latin tutor for Lisa Peters who was appearing in A Doll’s Life.  In September, a call to teach five boys on the set of Once Upon A Time in America put OLE in films.  The company’s first Broadway show, Almost an Eagle, rehearsed during the month of December 1982.

Over the next ten years, OLE continued to grow and provide services to a diverse set of clientele in a wide variety of locations. The company tutored Miss Piggy’s human stand-in on The Muppets Take Manhattan, kept pace with break dance whiz Robert Taylor on Beat Street, and accompanied the Cosby kids to Helsinki, Finland. Kate and Allie, various Nickelodeon shows , Les Miserables, Born on the Fourth of July, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and The New Mickey Mouse Club added to OLE's list of clients and locations, and the pool of qualified top-notch instructors grew as well.

The young professional’s education was always top priority. It was not enough to find the best teachers, On Location Education wanted to help families understand what a quality education for their children really meant, and to become a source of information and assistance for parents and production companies. To this end, Alan Simon became editor-in-chief of Call Back: the News Magazine for Young Performers. He founded the School for Young Performers in New York City, opened an office in Florida to meet the demands of Nickelodeon’s operations in Orlando, published a book, and created a series of informative seminars for young performers and their parents. He became co-chairperson of the Screen Actors Guild’s Young Performer's Committee, New York Branch, the Vice Chair of the Young Performer's Committee of the Actors' Equity Association, and an active member of The Broadway League (formerly The League of American Theatres and Producers).

On Location Education has evolved with each young performer it has served.  The company is now entering its 25th year of operation, and provides a complete range of educational services to children in all segments of the entertainment and athletics industries, as well as private tutoring for children of families whose professional commitments include extensive travel.  A quarter of a century after tutoring its first young actor, OLE continues the tradition of excellence in education that has made it an industry leader.

On Location Education supports the non-profit Crayons to Computers (C2C), an online store where teachers shop free to obtain classroom supplies they need to most effectively educate the future of our great nation.

The very first national tour of the Broadway show Les Miserables was the first company to hire On Location Education to provide local teachers for their extended sit-downs in Washington, D.C., Boston, MA, and Baltimore, MD.

On Location Education was hired by the Orlando-based film Parenthood to provide local teachers in 1988. Shortly thereafter, Nickelodeon engaged OLE's services for its many productions, following the company's move to Universal Studios Florida in 1990.

On Location Education West , Inc. opened in Los Angeles in 1992, and has been providing certified studio teachers to production companies ever since.
