Young Performers - State Labor Laws

Child Labor Laws & Requirements Covering Young Performers in the United States

Having been in the entertainment industry for more than three decades, On Location Education has been proud to serve the needs of young performers, their parents, and producers across the United States and Canada. Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of partnering with the Georgia Department of Labor as well as film and TV company representatives, SAG-AFTRA, and local onset teachers to help structure new child labor laws to ensure the safety of young performers. We take pride being involved in the process to strengthen the entertainment industry and safeguard its children.

Whether you are the parent of a young performer or a film/theatrical producer that employs children, you will need to familiarize yourself with labor laws, regulations, and requirements governing children in entertainment in jurisdictions where productions are taking place. One of the challenges in understanding and complying with these regulations is that they vary widely from state to state. While all laws regarding young performers aim to protect the rights of children, there is a broad range of requirements and responsibilities. In addition to child labor laws, many states have separate requirements and restrictions regarding the employment of minors in the entertainment industry.

Here is an overview of child entertainment laws across the country. This site features a handy chart that provides basic requirements for young performers and production companies. Keep in mind that the chart in the website is merely a brief description of state requirements.
